As one of the RECs for providing technical education in the fields of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, this institute was founded in 1961. The Undergraduate programs in Electronics Engineering were first offered in 1983–1984, while the Undergraduate programs in Computer Engineering and Production Engineering were initiated in 1988–89. The UG Chemical Engineering program was started in 1995–1996. Utilizing the authority granted by Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956, the Central Government, acting on the recommendation of the UGC, has designated the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVREC), Surat as a "Deemed University," effective December 4, 2002.As of August 15, 2007, the Institute has been designated as a "Institute of National Importance." Currently, the Institute offers three M.Sc. five-year integrated programs, including doctorate programs in all of the aforementioned fields, six undergraduate programs, nineteen graduate programs, and three M.Sc. programs.

The mission of the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat is to be a leading technical Institute not only at national level but also at International level for imparting training to manpower as per the needs of technology.
